Have you ever wondered why we humans have a problem concentrating on one specific thing? Why you can’t focus and how to fix it is very essential because while some people are able to focus on one or more things, getting things done in the allotted time, others struggle more leading to living an unfulfilled life.
Let us take a look at 4 reasons why you might be struggling to focus and how to tackle them
Stress might be one of the reasons why you can’t focus. A little bit of stress can be seen as “beneficial” because it can lead to the release of stress hormones e.g. cortisol to help you cope with it while you achieve the goals needed to remove the stressor.
For example, you want to graduate from high school, so the stress of ensuring you are always in school on time, completing your assignments, etc are good stressors to help you achieve your goal of becoming a graduate. There are other stressors that are bad but first, let’s take a look at what stress is.
Stress is caused when there is a build-up of tension in you, it can be emotional and or physical, it can also be expressed as frustration, anger, etc. This could be why you are finding it hard to focus and meet deadlines.
Stress could be acute or chronic. Chronic stress is the worse of the two as it can result in more life-threatening health problems.
Acute stress can be caused by pressure to reach your place of work early, or pressure to submit an assignment on time etc, This stress doesn’t last long, it usually goes away once the “goal” has been achieved. So in my opinion, acute stress can become a part of our day-to-day life without much damage to our bodies
Chronic stress on the other hand lasts for a long time. This is more damaging, and can affect your body, both internally and externally. It can also lead to temporary loss of focus which would be detrimental to our functionality as a whole.
How to cope with stress?
-Firstly, make a prioritized list, ask what is most important to me? When you have an opportunity to answer that question, you may continue. Then, addressing the sensitive and most important thing on your to-do list, you can employ the S.M.A.R.T (specific. Measurable, Achievable, reliable, and time-bound) goals.
-Secondly, you need to understand that you are not responsible for other people’s reactions. You are only responsible for yours, so quit dwelling on that.
-Thirdly, the effect of exercise on your mind and body and how it releases happy hormones known as serotonin cannot be overstated.
-Lastly, eat some good food, during stress you need to eat the right foods packed up with necessary vitamins to help the body fight stress in order to prevent full body breakdown.
2. Medical Reasons
Medical reasons might be one of the reasons why you can’t focus. There could be a medical reason that just needs to be diagnosed in order to be managed effectively. Other stressors are different from this because they can only be solved by medications.
The reason for your short focus span could be ADHD (Attention-deficit-hyperactivity disease), so if you get diagnosed with this, do not fret! There are several people with ADHD that are doing excellently well in life and work. So, getting diagnosed early might just be “your power” because as the saying goes, “knowledge is power”.
3. Lack Of Sleep
Lack of sleep might be one of the reasons why you can’t focus. It could just be that you are really tired, you have been working your butt off and your brain cells are in stress mode and it’s asking for rest.
Studies have shown that there is a correlation between sleep deprivation and cognitive impairment including speed, alertness, and overall memory function. Wow! It’s a big deal! So I need you to turn off the computer, pull the shades, get on the bed, and sleep.
Give your body and your brain the rest it needs and it will be thankful to you. You will be in this body for life, so treat it with some respect. As previously said, evaluate your schedule so that you can have a good 6-7 hours of sleep for the day, it will allow you to focus more.

4. Lack of motivation
Lack of motivation might be one of the reasons why you can’t focus. We have all been there, one minute, you are buzzing with energy ready to take over the world, and the next minute, you are finding it hard to even get out of bed.
You are not alone in this, so let’s look at ways to get back and keep your motivation.
How can I be motivated?
-First, find a mentor who is experienced in the thing you want to change, and in this case, you want to get and stay motivated, so find an expert in this field.
-Get in a support group, and surround yourself with positive friendships, and family.
-Make sure you read that book,
-Tell yourself that you are motivated and you can do this, write it down and put a date and time limit to achieving your goals.
-Each time you loose motivation again, bring out that journal, read it out loud, stand up and go after your goal.
There’s certainly a light at the end of the tunnel and I’m cheering you on. Come on, you can do this.
